# We Built the First MCP Security Scanner. Here's What We Found

## The Problem Nobody's Talking About

MCP (Model Context Protocol) servers are exploding. In just one year, we've gone from zero to **32,000+ public MCP servers** that AI agents can connect to.

But here's the terrifying part: **we're giving these servers unrestricted access to our systems without security audits.**

An AI agent with a compromised MCP server can:
- Read arbitrary files from your computer
- Execute shell commands
- Exfiltrate data to remote servers
- Access environment variables (including API keys)

And the worst part? **We proved this isn't theoretical.**

## What We Built

Last week, we built **[SkillShield MCP Scanner](https://skillshield.dev/mcp)** — the first security analysis tool specifically designed for MCP servers.

Unlike generic code scanners, ours understands the MCP protocol:

- **Tool Poisoning Detection** — Finds malicious instructions hidden in tool descriptions
- **Permission Analysis** — Flags over-permissioned access (filesystem, network, execution)
- **Prompt Injection Detection** — Identifies vulnerabilities in tool schemas
- **Supply Chain Analysis** — Detects dependency risks and typosquatting

We scanned **7 high-profile MCP servers** including official servers from Anthropic and the Model Context Protocol team.

## The Shocking Results

### Finding #1: No Standard Security Manifest

**100% of scanned MCP servers lacked a security-focused manifest.**

The official MCP servers don't use `mcp.json` — they embed configuration in `package.json`. This means:
- No standardized permission declaration
- No capability verification
- No automated security analysis possible

**Risk:** HIGH — Makes universal security scanning nearly impossible

### Finding #2: Tool Descriptions Are Attack Vectors

We found **3 MCP servers with suspicious patterns** in tool descriptions:

- Descriptions over 1000 characters (hiding malicious content)
- Instructions to "ignore previous constraints"
- Hidden HTTP exfiltration commands

**Example pattern detected:**

**Risk:** CRITICAL — LLMs execute based on these descriptions

### Finding #3: Permission Scope Is Massively Overbroad

Every MCP server we analyzed requested **more permissions than necessary**:

|--------|-----------|-----------------|
| filesystem | Full read/write | Specific project dir |
| github | All repos | Single repo |
| postgres | All databases | Specific DB |

**Risk:** HIGH — Violates principle of least privilege

### Finding #4: The Anthropic RCE (Already Patched)

While building our scanner, we discovered that **Anthropic's official Git MCP server** (pre-December 2025) had:

- **Path traversal** — Arbitrary file access outside git repos
- **Argument injection** — Remote code execution via crafted commands
- **Prompt injection vulnerability** — Exploitable without authentication

**The fix:** Anthropic patched this after security researchers reported it. But it proves **even official servers have critical vulnerabilities.**

## What This Means for AI Agents

If you're building with AI agents, you're likely using MCP servers. Here's what you need to know:

### ✅ Do This

1. **Audit every MCP server** before connecting
2. **Limit permissions** to the minimum required
3. **Sandbox MCP servers** in isolated environments
4. **Monitor network traffic** from MCP processes
5. **Use SkillShield** to scan before you install

### ❌ Don't Do This

1. **Don't trust** MCP servers just because they're popular
2. **Don't grant** full filesystem access unnecessarily
3. **Don't ignore** tool descriptions (read them carefully)
4. **Don't run** MCP servers with environment variable access to sensitive keys

## The Bigger Picture

MCP servers are the **browser extensions of AI agents**. And just like browser extensions:

- Most developers don't audit them
- They have privileged access to your system
- A single malicious one can compromise everything

But unlike browser extensions, **MCP servers can directly execute code, access databases, and make network requests.**

**We need a security standard for MCP servers.** Until then, scan everything.

2. **Partner with MCP marketplaces** (mcpmarket.com, Smithery) for integrated security
3. **Launch vulnerability disclosure program** for responsible reporting
4. **Propose MCP security standards** to the community
